Background of the Study
Nutritional counseling plays a pivotal role in preventing and managing various health conditions, particularly chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Nurses, due to their direct interaction with patients, are in a unique position to provide nutritional advice, monitor patient progress, and support healthy lifestyle changes. Effective nutritional counseling can lead to improved patient outcomes by enhancing diet adherence, preventing malnutrition, and promoting healthier dietary practices (Adebayo & Musa, 2024).
However, despite the importance of nutritional counseling in nursing care, several barriers hinder its effectiveness in healthcare settings, especially in low-resource areas like Bauchi State. Factors such as inadequate training, lack of nutritional resources, and cultural misconceptions about nutrition often limit the ability of nurses to deliver quality counseling (Bello et al., 2023). Furthermore, nurse-patient communication challenges, time constraints, and insufficient institutional support for nutritional programs exacerbate these issues (Okonkwo et al., 2023).
This study seeks to investigate the barriers to effective nutritional counseling by nurses in Bauchi State, with the aim of identifying factors that impede the success of nutritional interventions and suggesting ways to overcome them.
Statement of the Problem
In Bauchi State, as in many other regions of Nigeria, the burden of malnutrition, including undernutrition and overnutrition, remains high, contributing to the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) (WHO, 2024). Despite the critical role of nurses in providing nutritional counseling, there is a gap in the quality and effectiveness of these interventions. The challenges faced by nurses, including lack of proper training, limited time during patient consultations, and inadequate nutrition education materials, prevent effective delivery of nutritional counseling (Aliyu & Salisu, 2023). This study aims to explore these barriers and their impact on the effectiveness of nutritional counseling by nurses in Bauchi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses working in healthcare facilities across Bauchi State, with an emphasis on their involvement in nutritional counseling. Limitations may include a reliance on self-reported data from nurses, as well as varying levels of access to nutrition-related resources in different healthcare centers.
